Tips for Finding a Dentist
The Maine Dental Association suggests these tips if you are looking for a dentist:
- Ask trusted family members, friends, or co-workers for their recommendation. This is one of the best ways to find a dentist you will be comfortable with.
- If you are moving, your dentist may be able to refer you to another dentist in your new location.
- Ask your family physician or local pharmacist.
- Verify that the dentist is a member of the American Dental Association and the Maine Dental Association when you call to make your initial appointment. Members of these organizations agree to subscribe to a code of professional conduct.
- If you are looking for a specialist (i.e. a periodontist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, etc.), it is best to ask your regular dentist for a recommendation and referral. This way, you can be assured that copies of the necessary patient records will be transferred to the specialist. In addition, the specialist can report back to your general dentist for the purpose of coordinating your oral health care.
