17 Students Receive 2021 Appleby Scholarship

The Maine Dental Association Charitable Foundation has awarded $3,500 each to 17 students who were selected to receive the 2021 Alva S. Appleby Scholarship.

Recipients of the 2021 Appleby Scholarship include 10 students at the University of New England College of Dental Medicine, three students at Dalhousie University, two students at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, one student at New York University, and one student at Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

To be considered for the annual scholarship, a student must be a resident of the state of Maine (lived in Maine for purposes other than attending dental school), have completed their first year of dental school, and be currently enrolled in a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association.

Final Vaccination Rule Excludes Dentistry

The permanent version of the rule that requires employees at certain health care facilities in Maine be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 does not include those who work at dental practices. Dentistry was part of the emergency rule, which expired November 10, but has now been taken out after the final rulemaking process and public comment period.

A FAQ page about the rule, which you can find HERE, includes the question, "Why does the final Maine DHHS rule eliminate Dental Practices?" It says, "Upon review of the data and comments that were submitted on jurisdiction, the Maine DHHS removed dental health practices from this rule."

It is up to each individual practice whether they institute a COVID-19 vaccine policy.

You can see the final vaccination rule HERE.
